GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIES:

The custodian under the general direction of the Head Custodian will be responsible for daily, school recess and summer cleaning, security, conservation of utilities and grounds, including snow removal.  The custodian will also be responsible for the operation and minor maintenance of the various building systems such as lighting, plumbing, electrical, heat and ventilation, etc. using established practices and procedures within a public school building. 

ILLUSTRATIVE EXAMPLES OF WORK PERFORMED:

  1. Cleans and maintains, by established standards, designated spaces, equipment, etc. by performing specific duties such as: vacuuming, dry and wet mopping, wet dusting, washing and disinfecting as well as removal of spots/stains from surfaces and floors, cleaning glass, applying floor-finish and other related floor-care duties.
  2. Request, proportion and use chemicals, equipment and other supplies.
  3. Collect and dispose of garbage and other waste per district guidelines.
  4. To move or assist in moving furniture and equipment within assigned area.
  5. Maintain building and grounds security within the assigned cleaning area as well as notification to the proper authorities in case of emergency.
  6. Written communication with Head Custodian as required.
  7. Grounds work to surrounding areas including such duties as: raking, sweeping, shoveling, snow removal, maintaining shrubs, trees and other vegetation.
  8. To do minor repair work on buildings or equipment, or to assist maintenance staff when necessary.
  9. Assist staff, students and visiting public utilizing facilities, where necessary.
  10. Other related duties as required by the Head Custodian.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

A knowledge of cleaning methods, materials and equipment used in public school buildings and surrounding grounds, to include, but not limited to: commercial floor machines, vacuums, ladders, cleaning carts,  lawn mowers, trimmers, hand trucks and snow removal equipment; must have a knowledge of mechanical systems (switches and breakers),as well as heating, ventilation and air conditioning systems; the ability to work independently with minimal supervision; the ability to readily understand and carry out directions, both oral and written; the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, both orally and in written form; the ability to develop effective working relationships with staff, students, parents and the community; manual dexterity and the ability to perform duties with an awareness of school department requirements and policies.

 EDUCATION:

Such as may be gained through graduation from a senior high school or equivalent (GED).  Three to six months related experience preferred.
