POSITION SUMMARY:

The Senior Accountant is responsible for performing complex accounting functions, including general ledger 

maintenance, account reconciliations, financial reporting, and budget monitoring. This position reviews financial 

transactions for accuracy, assists with year-end closing and annual audits, and provides financial guidance to district 

departments and schools. The essential duties of the position include without limitation to the following:

• Maintain and oversee the district's general ledger, ensuring transactions are accurately recorded and properly classified
• Prepare and review journal entries, including recurring, adjusting, accrual, and year-end entries
• Prepare and review monthly bank reconciliations for all district bank accounts, investigate discrepancies and outstanding items
• Assist with reconciling Due To/Due From balances to the City’s records and investigate and resolve differences in a timely manner
• Monitor and maintain the district's chart of accounts in accordance with the Rhode Island Department of Education (RIDE) Uniform Chart of Accounts (UCOA)
• Ensure financial transactions are properly coded using applicable UCOA account classifications
• Assist with reconciling grant expenditures and booking corresponding revenues
• Assist with booking of cash receipts through bank accounts and the State of Rhode Island Payment Portal (RIPAY)
• Support Controller with budget uploads in general ledger system
• Develop and regularly update excel spreadsheets that are used to create valuable reports for the Director of Finance and School Committee
• Assist clerks in the district by answering questions that may arise regarding financial information
• Assist in the preparation of schedules for the annual fiscal and compliance audits
• Support the Director of Finance and Controller with annual audit, generate reports to fulfill audit requests
• All other duties assigned by the Executive Director of Finance and the Controller

Knowledge & Skills:

• Knowledge and understanding of: 
• Fund Accounting
• Tyler ERP Munis Software (preferred)
• UCOA and UCOA account segments (preferred)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Suite
• Proficiency in Google Suite
• Thorough knowledge of federal and state accounting laws

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: 

Experience: 

• 3-5 years of progressive responsibility in a business office or accounting position
• Public sector, school district, or municipal finance experience preferred

EDUCATION: 

• Bachelor’s Degree in Accounting or Finance required
• Master’s degree preferred
• CPA preferred
